How to Repeat Header in Google Docs Table – Workaround

Published on

If an inserted table is spread across multiple pages, you may want to repeat the header of that table in Google Docs. How can we do it?

At the time of writing this tutorial, there is no built-in solution to repeat the header in a Google Docs Table. So you can follow the below workaround.

The workaround is different for different scenarios.

If your Google Docs Document only contains a table, no other content, then it’s simple. Here you can use the Header option which is detailed below.

Sometimes the table may be part of a document. That means there may be other content within the document. Then you must split the table and manually insert the header. How?

Update on 24-12-2021:-

There is a new built-in feature to repeat the header row in Google Docs. You can find more info on that here – How to Create a Table and Pin and Unpin Header Rows in Google Docs.

How To Repeat Header in a Google Docs Table

Let me show you how to repeat the header in a Google Docs table in different ways.

Repeat Header in Google Docs with the Header Option

You can adapt this method if your document only contains a table. Here is one example.

I have the following document which contains two pages and a table that occupies both the pages.

Page 1:

the page # 1 to repeat header

Page 2:

the page # 2 to repeat header row

Ho to repeat the table header available on page 1 on page 2 in this Google Docs document?

Steps:

First, select the header row on the first page and copy (Ctrl+C).

Then go to the menu Insert > Header & Page number > Header. Paste (Ctrl+V) the copied header row.

Do check the “Different first-page” option.

Option # 1 to Repeat Header in Google Docs Table

This is the first workaround to repeat the header in a Google Docs table. Needless to say, it will only work in certain cases as detailed above.

How to Manually Insert Header in a Google Docs Table

Here are the steps to manually insert the header row in a table. This is the recommended method. It works in all cases.

Here also first copy the header row. Then;

Click the very first column on the table on the second page. Right-click and select “Insert row above”

Paste the header row copied.

Manually Insert Header in Google Docs Table

Repeat this for subsequent pages, if any.

Repeat Header in Google Docs Table at Custom Position

You can split or break a table and insert a page break between the two tables.

Must Read: How to Split a Table in Google Docs Word Processor.

Then you can follow the above manual method to insert the header. This way you can get the header repeated at a custom position in Google Docs.

The above are the possible workarounds to repeat the header row in a table in Google Docs.

That’s all for now. See you back next time with a Google Sheets tutorial. Enjoy!

  1. This worked great! Thanks! After the table, I inserted a “Section Break (continuous)” and unclicked “Link to Previous” in the header on the next page. That way the pages following the table do not have the table header.

    • Thanks, Jr for sharing this tip 🙂

Actually this post was published in January 2019 before the said new feature added to Docs (in June the same year). Since I am using Google Docs once in a blue moon, I was unaware of this addition.
